Apollo 8 Reentry In August of 1968, three NASA astronauts received a call telling them to cancel their winter holiday plans — they were going to the Moon. Fifty years later we are celebrating the historic mission of Apollo 8: ( ) Date: Dec. 27, 1968. This Apollo 8 reentry photograph was taken by a Air Force ALOTS (Airborne Lightweight Optical Tracking System) camera mounted on a KC-135A aircraft flown at 40,000 ft altitude. Apollo 8 splashed down at 10:15 in the central Pacific approximately 1,000 miles South-Southwest of Hawaii.
