Kampong Ayer is situated on the Brunei River at Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. Around 39,000, about 10 per cent of the total population of the Sultanate of Brunei, live in the village, which is an amalgamation of several villages. The houses appear to be dilapidated but in fact have all modern conveniences. There are restaurants, shops, schools, mosques and a hospital. Transport is by speed-boat water taxis.
