Two pause to listen to the far cry of a stag on a distant mountain crest. Hokusai cleverly arranged his composition so that the deer are the central focus despite their diminutive size. The poem about the lonely stags love-sick cry was written by a commoner, who himself dwelt in the mountains near Kyoto.'
