In considering these immediate environs ofNewark it may be said that in 1806, for the pur-poses of assessment and collection of taxes, New-ark Township was divided into three districts orwards, known as the Bloomfield, Newark, andOrange wards. Orange, as the generic name ofthis entire community, found its real beginningsabout 1720, when the Mountain Society of onehundred persons erected its first meeting hous«;):,now represented by the First Presbyterian* Church ^^^-^.
