It was in theSelkirk Mountains, west of the Rockies, however, that the forms of clinging snow were moststrikingly exhibited. Near Glacier House, thealtitude of which is 4,000 feet above the sea, therailway traverses a forest composed of tall, straightpine-trees. Great numbers of these on either sideof the railway have been cut down to providetimber for the long snow-sheds which protect thetrains from avalanches. The base of the trunkbeing tough, the trees are not cut through at thelevel of the ground but at a height of about6 feet above. The result is that there are on bothsides of the railway-line hundreds of wooden pillarsabout 6 feet high and of a nearly uniform diameter. ^ J Plate 41.—A nine-foot snow-mushroom seen from SNOW-MUSHROOMS AND CAHOTS 215 of 2 feet. Upon their circular table-tops thesnow collects. When the tree-stump is shorter thecap appears as a boss projecting above the generalsurface. In such cases there is a hidden cavebeneath, into which one may easily fall, and fromwhich it is difficult to get out when hamperedby snowshoes (Fig. 28).
