Transplanted kidney. Coloured 3-D computed tomography (CT) scan of the lower abdomen of a kidney transplant patient. A contrast medium has been used to show the blood vessels. The aorta, the body's main artery, runs down centre and divides into the two iliac arteries that serve the legs. At lower right are the blood vessels serving the transplanted kidney. Transplantation replaces a failed or failing kidney with a donor kidney. In most cases, the diseased kidney is not removed, with the donor kidney being grafted onto a different blood supply, as shown here. Kidneys filter waste from the blood and excrete it as urine. This image was created using OsiriX medical imaging software which allows surgeons to navigate around the body using animations of the data.
