It is just one century since the first *attempt was made to establish a blastfurnace in the Province of Ontario, but,unlike the first attempt in Quebec, it was nota success, the enterprise being abandonedafter a trial of two years. The site of thefurnace was at what is now known as Lynd-hurst, in the county of Leeds. About 1817a furnace was started at Normandale,county of Norfolk, in the then Londondistrict. After varying fortunes and variousownerships, it was abandoned in 1847, fuel. The year 1866 sawthe last of that industry, and, indeed, the LAST BLAST FURNACE to be operated within the Province of On-tario for 30 years. We retrace our steps a little to notethat a blast furnace was started and operatedfor a short time at Madoc, Hastings county,and another for a brief period at Houghton,county of Norfolk. The latter was startedby Mr. Van Norman, whose name in con-nection with the pig iron industry hasalready been mentioned The furnace wasstarted about the time the Great Westernrailway was being constructed, and its pur-pose was to supply charcoal iron for makingcar wheels.
