The return fall migration commences 22 September and lasts until 28 November. They have been reported in all months of the year, but winter records should be verified. Habits and Habitat: This "seagull," as it is known by most Kansans, is a familiar sight, particularly in the spring, when thousands cross our state heading for their breeding grounds in the northern plains states and Canada. They can be seen following tractors that are working fields, as the gulls swoop down to grab the insects, worms, and probably small rodents that are uncovered. These gulls—their body feathers suffused with pink and their black head and black-and- white wing tips—are a thrill to see as they hover over the tractor. At Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira Refuge, it is not uncommon to see 10,000 to 20,000 gulls in one day. Field Marks: The black head and white wing tips with black markings are unmistakable, but watch for the occasional Laughing Gull that has black wing tips with no white patches. Food: In Kansas, the Franklin's Gull feeds primarily on insects and other invertebrates it obtains along marshes or in open pastures and plowed fields. It frequently forages in burned-over pastures during the spring Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Thompson, Max C; Ely, Charles A.
