Owing to the very complete nature of the equipment ofthe workshops, the workmanship of these pumps is all thatcan be desired, the whole being finished to standard gauges. This type of pump finds a large application in connec-tion with mining work as it occupies a very small space andrequires practically no attention whatever while running, thebearings being of the self-oiling type. As these pumps have been designed to give the highestpossible efficiency every care has been bestowed upon thefinish and materials employed for the internal parts, the im-pellers and guide blades being constructed of high tensionbronze and the spindle of nickel steel. An automatic ar-rangement is also provided to balance the end thrust uponthe impellers and a ball thrust bearing is provided to main-,tain the shaft in its proper position. All Allens centrifugal pumps are adapted for drivingeither direct by a steam engine or electric motor, and canbe arranged for rope or belt Fig. 3. When necessary, foot valves can be fitted to the suctionpipes or where steam is available an air ejector can be fittedfor priming the pump, or the air exhauster may be of aspecial positive type, which can be driven direct from thepump shaft. Water Power Turbines—The increasing number of oprportunities which now present themselves for the introduc-tion of water turbines, owing to the opening up of so manydistricts where suitable supplies of water for driving water turbines arc available, has led Messrs. Allen to give greatattention to the further development of this class of ma-chinery. For water turbines up to 400 output Messrs. Allendesign and construct their own special type of turbine, butfor outputs above 400 and up to 10,000 in oneunit, the company have a working agreement with the firmof Piccard Pictet & Co., of Geneva, Switzerland, under whichthey construct large turbines of their design.
