3rd November 1871, the then Prince of Wales accepted the memorial from the Mayor of Falmouth to become Patron of the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club. From then on a warrant was issued permitting members of the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club to fly a defaced blue ensign display the Prince of Wales feathers.
