Worker ant from the genus Rhytidoponera (Subfamily Ponerinae) in an alert stance. Some of the most common ants in Australia, they are found throughout the continent and can be very abundant, especially in urban areas such as yards, gardens and parks. They are general predators or scavengers. Workers generally forage singly. Rhytidoponera is a large genus with 104 described species. They are limited to eastern Indonesia, New Guinea, the Solomon Island, New Caledonia and Australia. Photographed on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia.
