In six months the work wasready for its production. THE FIRST PERFORIVIANCE. The first performance took place on July 26,1882, in the Festival Theatre at Bayreuth, whichwas then reopened to the public for the first timesince the memorable production of Der Ringdes Nibelungen, in 1876. This performance, andthe one next following it on July 28, were reserved [10]. The Origins of Parsifal for the members of the Wagner Societies; thethird and the thirteen succeeding performances —there were sixteen in all — were open to the pub-lic. The occasion was of an importance to themusical world comparable to that of the firstNibelung performances; and, like those, thefirst representations of Parsifal were throngedwith musicians, critics and amateurs from all overthe world. After the manner of Bayreuth, sev-eral of the personages in the cast was representedby two or three different artists in rotation.
