India: 'Sa'di in a Rose Garden'. Watercolour painting by Govardhan (fl. 1640s), from a manuscript of the 'Gulistan (Rose Garden)' by Sa'di, c. 1645. Abu-Muhammad Muslih al-Din bin Abdalah Shirazi (1184 – 1283/1291), better known by his pen-name as Sa'di or, simply, Saadi, was one of the major Persian poets of the medieval period. Still widely quoted, and recited by Iranian schoolchildren, he is recognized not only for the quality of his writing, but also for the depth of his social thoughts.
