Cervical vertebral implant and repair. Coloured lateral X-ray of the cervical (neck) spine of a 38-year-old man, showing the presence of screws (white) and an intervertebral disc implant following an operation to repair a slipped (herniated) intervertebral disc. This was a herniation of the disc between the C5 and C6 vertebrae. The screws have been inserted in the vertebra, with a reinforcing plate (white) connecting them, supporting the spine as the area heals. Slipped discs can lead to the herniated tissue pressing on the spinal cord, causing severe pain and other neurological symptoms.
