HYGIENE OF THE CIRCULATORY ORGANS. 73 This knot should be placed over the aitery, between the woundand the heart, and the ends carried around the limb and looselytied. A stick, five or six inches long, should be placed underthe handkerchief, which should be twisted until the knot hasmade sufficient compression on the artery to allow the removalof the fingers without a return of bleeding. Continue thecompression until a surgeon can be called. Fig. 46. Fig. Fig. 4G. The method of applying the knotted handkerchief to make compression onthis artery. When an artery of the arm is cut, elevatingthe wounded limb above the head will tend to arrest the flow ofblood. In a wound of a lower limb, raise the foot, so that itshall be higher than the hip, until the bleeding ceases. Illustration. On one occasion, the distinguished Dr. NathanSmith was called to a person who had divided one of the largearteries below the knee. After trying in vain to find the bleed-ino- vessel, so as to secure it, he caused the foot to be elevated What is shown by figs. 46, 47 ?
