John F. Kennedy (1917-1963), American President, giving a speech to a joint session of the US Congress on 25th May 1961. This speech was to start the great space race between America and the then Soviet Union. This culminated in the Moon landing by Neil Armstrong from the \Eagle\" landing craft via the Apollo 11 space mission in 1969. John F. Kennedy declared during this speech \"I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth\". Vice President Lyndon Johnson (upper left) and Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn (upper right) are also seen."
