Shetland Croft House Museum, Boddam, Scotland, UK: rear view of house (R) with corn drying kiln attached to the barn & stable (L). A restored C19th steading run by the Shetland Heritage Association, presented as seen in the 1870s when home to the extended family of a fisherman/seaman. The house was lived in until 1960s (last occupant Bobby Mouat, 1962). The gable end chimney serves the bedroom (ben end), the metal chimney with smoke from a peat fire is over the dividing wall fireplace facing into the kitchen & living area (butt end). In this view the byre linked to the butt end of the house is hidden by the barn/stable roof. The house, byre, barn & kiln are connected internally via a through passage. The thatched roof of straw over turf is netted & weighted with stones.
