RiULWAY AND LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING 379 Electric Locomotive with Side illustration shows a novel type ofelectric locomotive which has been de-signed jointly by the General Electric andby American Locomotive Companies fortrying a scheme of transmitting powerfrom the motors to the drivers throughside rods instead of by the ordinarv direct wear of tlie wheels and also that of therailhead. The placing of the motors in thecab facilitates inspection and repairs, andthe renewal of the commutator maintenance charges for the motorswill also be greatly reduced and practicallyall road dust and other foreign material canbe kept out. The locomotive is designedto produce a tractive effort of 30,000 a speed of 18 miles an hour and withability to attain a maximum speed of 50mdes an hour. The locomotive will oper-ate equally well in either direction. It hasbeen tried with temporary motors of asomewhat smaller capacity and the testshave demonstrated conclusively that thedesign is satisfactory in every way. It isproposed to extend the cab over the entirelength of the machine when the propermotors are installed on the present cab and guards are only forthe temporary protection of the apparatusnow installed. One of the principal advantages foundin this type of construction is that a motorof large diameter and small air gap canbe used in conjunction with small diam-eter of driving wheels, and at the sametime the motor can be spring
