Topeka, Kansas 3-30-2014 The Rainbow House Topeka Kansas. Aaron Jackson, one of the founders of Planting Peace, a multi-pronged charity that has in the past concentrated on rainforest conservation, opening orphanages and deworming programs, bought a house that sits directly across from the church's compound six months ago. On Tuesday, March 19, he and a team of volunteers are painting it to match the gay pride flag. The house still needs two more coats of paint, but itÕs already attracted international attention. Jackson did a radio interview Thursday morning with a Canadian radio station; also on the line was church leader Margie Phelps, he said. ÒThey asked her about the rainbow house and she said, you mean Ôthe sodomite house,ÕÓ Jackson said. Shirley Phelps-Roper, daughter of Westboro founder Fred Phelps and a frequent spokesperson for the group, told Kansas CityÕs Fox 4 she ÒlovesÓ the paint job. ÒWhat he does is he keeps the eyes of the whole earth on this message. Now everyday all people are thinking about is God will not have same-sex marriage,Ó she said. Since the ÒrainbowÓ house is in an area zoned for residential use, it will not be used for offices but will provide a place for volunteers to live, Jackson explained. He hopes to start an anti-bullying program and is seeking seed money. Meanwhile, the house is causing traffic jams in Topeka, Jackson said. He calls the response ÒincredibleÓ and remains amazed at the number of people showing up. ÒThousands of people have stopped by, people from out of state, and theyÕre taking pictures.Ó Credit: Mark Reinstein
