In the chapel of the university are a num-ber of paintings by 96 IX STRASBURG The greatest curiosity of Strasburg is theRhine; after that, its cathedral. Uusually, on entering Strasburg, the firstlandmark that greets ones eye is the slim,lone spire of the cathedral. Years ago an itinerant showman travelledabout with a model of the celebrated Stras-burg clock, and the writer got his first ideasof a great Continental cathedral from therather crude representation of the Gothicbeauties of that at Strasburg, which gracedthe canvas which hung before the showmanstent. The clock is still there, in all its mysticalincongruity, but ones interest centres in thegrace and elegance of the dwindling spireand its substructure of nave, transept, andchoir, which dominates all else round about. Of many eras, the structure of this greatLatin-cross cathedral is not harmonious; but, 97 Cathedrals and Churches of the Rhine for all that, it is a great Gothic triumph, andone which might well lend most of its detailsof construction a
