They became theparents of eight children, of was the youngest and be-came one of the most distinguishedcitizens of Iowa. He attended thedistrict schools, and in early childhood evinced anunusual taste for learning. Besides attending thedistrict schools, the village pastor instructed himin Greek and Latin. After completing his prepar-ations for college, which he did at Hampton Acad-emy, he entered Dartmouth College, in August,1832, which was in the sixteenth year of his was a hard student, advanced rapidly, and inFebruary. 1835, bid adieu to the college halls, andwith James Walker, of Peterborough.
