Tamoxifen cancer drug and ERR-gamma. Molecular model showing tamoxifen drug molecules (balls-and-sticks) bound to and inhibiting an ERR-gamma (oestrogen-related receptor gamma, NR3B3) molecule (white blob). ERR-gamma is involved in the production of oestrogen. Tamoxifen is a 'selective oestrogen receptor modulator' (SERM) that blocks oestrogen production in breast tissue by inhibiting ERR-gamma. Some breast cancer cells require oestrogen to grow. Therefore, using tamoxifen to block oestrogen production can help prevent the cancer spreading.
