Abbazia di Farfa seen from Castelnuovo di Farfa, Sabine Mountains, Lazio. Italy.

The Abbey of Farfa was one of the most rich and powerful monastic communities in Central Italy. At the height of its splendour a vast portion of Central Italy belong to the Abbey. Its date of origin is uncertain but probably mid-6th century or earlier. It was reconstructed between the 7th & 8th centuries and then pillaged by various warring factions including the Saracens. Situated in N. Lazio at the head of the valley of the River Farfa it commanded a fine defensive position. It contains records and manuscripts in one of Europe's richest libraries and some of these date from the 9th century, many of which are now in the Vatican. In 1928 Farfa was declared a National Monument.
