Editorial use only. This image may not be used to state or imply endorsement by CERN of any product, activity or service BCDMS detector. Engineer working on the BCDMS (Bologna-CERN-Dubna-Munich-Saclay) particle detector at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. Particle detectors (blue) are sandwiched between sheets of magnetised iron. This was part of the EMC (European muon collaboration) experiment, which studied the behaviour of quarks. The 50 metre long BCDMS apparatus collided muons into hydrogen and deuterium atoms and tracked the resulting sub- atomic particles, which included quarks. Picture taken in 1978.
