The road through Glenshee to Braemar was once was an important military road constructed by road builder William Caulfield, an officer in the British Army. Caulfeild was responsible for 900 miles of road and over 600 bridges. Major Caulfeild died in 1767. Lodge is on the Balmoral Estate about 8 miles north of the castle. ... The lodge previously owned by Sir Edmund Stockdale Lord Mayor of London was gutted in 1987, but twenty years later is being rebuilt as a 12 bedroom retreat for Charles and Camilla. The Lodge will compliment Birkhall which Charles inherited from the Queen Mother.
