A shared-lane marking or sharrow marking for a bicycle route on Jefferson Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota. In the US, the wide shape of the arrow combined with the bike symbol, gave rise to the unofficial names of "bike in a house" or sharrow. The orignal "bike in a house" or "man jumping barrels at home" marking was developed by James Mackay ca: 1993. In 2004 the name sharrow was coined by Oliver Gajda, of the City and County of San Francisco Bicycle Program. Sharrow is a portmanteau of share and arrow.
