For the convenient introduction of the liquid intotheretort several instruments have been contrived. When it isto be added at distant intervals during the process, the bestcontrivance is the one here exhibited, which consists of abent tube, a, with a funnel at the upper the whole is to be introduced at once,it is either done through the tubulure by thecommon funnel; or, if into a plain retort, through a funnel of a construction similarto the one here represented ;. ^ which will enable the operator to pour in theliquid without touching the inside of the re-tort neck, which by being soiled would con-taminate the result of the process. 174. Retorts are made of earthenware, and of green, orof white glass, according to the operations for which theyare destined. They are also heated in several differentmodes. When the vessel is of earthenware, and the sub-stance to be distilled requires a strong heat to raise it intovapour, the naked fire is applied. Glass retorts are usuallyplaced in heated sand; and, when of a small size, the flameof an argand lamp, cautiously regulated, may be very safelyused. If the nature of the operation be such as to requirea glass vessel, and a high temperature, the retort must becoated.* 175. In many processes a large proportion of the extri-cated matter is partly condensable into a liquid and partly agas, which is not condensed without the presence of a con-siderable proportion of water. Unless, therefore, somemeans were pro
