In the midst of the dunes continuous beltsof Toghraks could still be made out at intervals of three tofour miles. The old river beds marked by them came fromthe west-north-west, evidently branches of the river whichwatered the ancient settlement, and my plane-table sheetshowed clearly that they connected with the lines of deadjungle which we had crossed at right angles farther eastwhen marching towards the ancient site.
