Passengersof street railway cars of twenty or eventen years ago used to be annoyed contin-ually by miserably lighted and ventilated A Street Car Replacer. We illustrate in this connection a verysimple device* that has been introduced forthe purpose of replacing street cars thathave left the track and to derail themwhere it becomes necessary to haul themoff the track. The mechanism is shownin perspective in section and in plan in ourengraving. It consists of a light cast-ironplate, with a frog cast upon it, and may beplaced so as to catch the flange as it liesoutside of the rail, lifting it over the sameinto place, or it may be reversed and catchit so as to carry it up and out, thus throwing.
