Wismar, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany - Karstadt Department Store, In 1881 Rudolph Karstadt opened his first store under the name Tuch-, Manufactur- und Confectionsgeschaeft Karstadt in Wismar, which thus became the parent store of the later group. In 1948, the expropriation of the Karstadt branches took place, and the parent store became part of the state-run GDR trade organization as Mecklenburgisches Kaufhaus VEB. In 1991, Karstadt AG took over the Wismar parent store and renovated the building.
