Creux du Van

The Creux du Van is a natural amphitheatre in the limestone of the Jura mountains. It is some 1400 metres across and about 150 metres deep. Situated in the Val de Travers (canton of Neuchatel) close to the town of Noiraigue. Some theories are that this feature was carved by glaciers, others that it formed from the collapse of an underground cavern. In 1876 the Creux du Van was turned into the first Swiss nature reserve by the Club Jurassien, an association of romantics and nature enthusiasts.
