Burrowing Owl Athene cunicularia (Molina) Status: The Burrowing Owl is an uncommon transient statewide. It is an uncommon summer resident in the west but may be common locally, and it nests casually east- ward to Barton and Sumner counties. It is casual in winter, chiefly in the southwest. Period of Occurrence: The species is usually present from early March to late October in the west and from mid-April to early August in the east; extreme dates are 6 March and 14 November. Johnston (1965) gives median arrival and departure dates of 9 April and 26 September. Breeding: Birds nest in burrows, usually those of prairie dogs, badgers, or foxes, but they may occasionally dig their own. The burrow is often 6 to 10 feet long, and the nest chamber may be 2 feet or more below ground. The nest chamber and the burrow entrance may be strewn with bits of manure, food remains, and other debris. The 3 to 10 pure white eggs are incubated almost entirely by the female for 28 days. When they are about three weeks old, the young appear above.
