The only excep-tions to these generalizations are that one Britishand one Dutch company are working in Kedah, andan American company is making a small commence-ment in Bangtaphan, and a British smelting com-pany is establishing an ore-buying agency in number of Siamese and Malays engaged in tin-mining is very small. There is an enormous field for the expansion of. Mining 243 the tin-mining industry in the Siamese possessionsin the Malay Peninsula, and considerable activity inprospecting, on the part of European and Americancapitalists, has lately been shown. At present, Puket Island (on the west coast) isthe most important tin-mining centre in all theSiamese states; but Kedah, Takuapar, and Renong(also on the west coast) have a considerable miningindustry. On the east coast, Nakon Sri, Tamarat,and Jalar (Port Patani) are the chief centres. Themost promising districts for future developments arein Kedah, Rahman, Jalar, Takuatung, and Renong, Sapphires and rubies are the only gems the work-ing of which is of any importance, though spinels, zircons, garnets, and topaz are also pro-Gems. duced to a small extent. Of the twoforms of corundum, sapphires are very much moreabundant and more largely worked than sapphires form a considerable proportionof the worlds supply of this gem.
