. The Christian annual for the year of our lord ... E CHRISTIAN ANNUAL 49 adopt a constitution, the brethren contenting themselves with giving NewTestament references as their all-sufRcient authority for the things they time of the conference seems to have been largely taken up with thepreparation of a roll of ministers and the examination and setting apart ofcandidates for the ministry. No mention is made of the sisters having any part in this first meeting but,at the next session, at Brutus, Cayuga Co., in October, 1819, the brethrenshowed the breadth of their vision when they approbated Abigail Roberts ashaving a public gift. At the third session at Charleston (now Charleston Four Comers), Sep-tember 18-20, 1820, it was agreed to divide the New York Conference into twoconferences, to be known by the names of East and West Conferences in NewYork, bounded by or near Onondaga County. There is a feeling among the brethren that we have neglected our fieldwork. As early as 1827 the fathers saw this need and took into consideration. the propriety of establishing a traveling ministry and accordingly appointedElders Levi Hathaway, John Hollister, John Ross, and Edward H. Peavy totravel, as such, for this present year, with injunctions to visit all the churchesbelonging to this conference; and also that they keep an account of all theirexpenditures and of all gifts, donations, and public contributions; and thatthey render the same account to the committee whom the conference may sepfit to appoint for that purpose at their next session. I cannot bear to omit the letter which Rev. James Andrews presented in1828, when he sought admission to the conference, as it so clearly shows thespirit of the early ministry. This is to certify that Br. James Andrews was by order of conference onthe tenth day of August, 1818, at Big Spring, in Crawford County, Indiana, solemnly set apart to the ministry by fasting and jn-ayer and laying on thehands of the Presbytery. Signed by order
