On 29 January 1915, his battalion came under heavy attack at the Brickfields, Cuinchy and a German sniper shot Lt Barthrop through the head, killing him instantly. Lt Barthorp is buried at Cuinchy Communal Cemetery (Q2164804), near Béthune.
