American messenger . THE SPIRIT OF THANKFULNESS BY REV. EDGAR WHITAKER WORK, Pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian Church, New York City EDGAR W. WORK, OD is always looking for grate-ful men down here in theworld. He must know that ifmen are grateful, if they havethe spirit of thankfulness, theywill be open-hearted towardgood of every kind. When menhave real gratitude in their souls they are pre-paring the way unconsciously for the comingof the Kingdom of God. Gratitude is the opensesame to the heart of God and to the wholekingdom of righteousness. It is ingratitude thatbars the way to the greater coming of the King-dom. Gratitude, moreover, is one of the pivotalthings in the Kingdom. One cannot conceive ofa Christian without gratitude. Faith mightexist without distinct gratitude, but it would bea rough and unbeautiful thing—like a marblestatue carved with hatchets. It is quite clearthat all the Christian faculties and virtues mustbe shot through and through with gratitude, else there is no touch of grace upon them andthey are left hard and unfinished. A distinguished critic was once asked to passjudgment upon the work of an artist.
