Many skullelements have joint surfaces that form potentially movable articulations with other elements, butconsideration of the adult cranium and mandible as whole units shows that they were not kinetic to anynotable extent. The main variations in morphology among known specimens of E. africanus aresummarized. Convincing intrinsic evidence for the recognition of more than a single species ofEiythrosuchus

Many skullelements have joint surfaces that form potentially movable articulations with other elements, butconsideration of the adult cranium and mandible as whole units shows that they were not kinetic to anynotable extent. The main variations in morphology among known specimens of E. africanus aresummarized. Convincing intrinsic evidence for the recognition of more than a single species ofEiythrosuchus is lacking. Among erythrosuchids, the distribution of apparently derived osteologicalfeatures supports evidence from braincase osteology that has been interpreted as indicating thatE. africanus and the Chinese Shansisuchus are more closely related to one another than either taxon is toGarjainia prima, although a new explicit analysis of phylogeny has yet to be performed.
