Border morris musicians and dancers in Upton on Severn Worcestershire

Border Morris (so called because the tradition derives from the Welsh/English border area) has a characteristic costume of brightly coloured rag strips (tatters) attached to coats and elaborately decorated hats. The blackened faces are also part of the tradition and, so the explanation goes, relate to the time when dancers would not want to be recognised when they were out essentially dancing to earn money.
