This is probably the oldest jail in the country, having beenbuilt in 1653, and was, until recently, the property of the county,but it now belongs to the Town of York and is kept in a good stateof repair. It is occasionally used as a temporary place of deten-tion for criminals. OLD. POST OFFICE. GARDINER. ME. This was erected and used as a store by Dr. Gardiner in1763. He was a most enterprising and energetic man; and did morethan any other person to develop tliis part of Maine. The Doctorcame from Kingston, R. I., and commenced operations here about1762.
