As DUTIES OF CO-ORDINATE OFFICERSThe superintendent of way executes and main-tains the work for which designs and specificationsare made by the engineer of maintenance of way, sub-ject to the approval of the general manager. Inaddition to the regular maintenance of track andbonding, this officer has charge of the storage yards,the stockrooms, the supply trains, the quarry andother facilities for carrying on the business of thedepartment. The activities of this branch and of theengineering forces are carried out according to thefollowing divisions: Essex, miles; Hudson, miles; Central, miles; Southern,1 miles; Bergen and Passaic combined, and miles respectively. The centraldivision also has charge of the 25 miles of single track. Electric Ry. These officers are the fol-lowing: Superintendent of way, engineer of main-tenance of way and superintendent of buildings. Theforces under these officials, however, are alwaysavailable for work in any other branch of this depart-ment. This relationship is indicated by the brokenlines between the three co-ordinate officers. Allauthorizations are issued directly by the general man-ager in accordance with the requisitions which aremade upon him by the officer who is responsible forthe specified work. which the Public Service Railway is now operatingfor the Elizabeth & Trenton Railway. Each divisionhas a roadmaster, who reports to the superintendent ofmaintenance of way. The roadmaster has a clerkand foremen of the different subdivisions. The num-ber of subforemen and of the
