Georg Schweinfurth (1836-1925), German naturalist. Schweinfurth, who was born in what is now Latvia, carried out work in East and Central Africa on botany, zoology and ethnology, as well as mapping the geography and river systems of the region. He discovered the Welle River (Uele River) that is now known to be part of the Congo system. His major achievements were in ethnology, detailed in his book 'Im Herzen von Afrika' (The Heart of Africa, 1874). He also explored the Sahara and Arabian deserts, and founded a geographical society in Cairo where he carried out his studies of Africa. This German photograph dates from around 1880.
