Lambert's color pyramid of 1772. The Lambertian color pyramid was the first three-dimensional color model and was intended to make color easier for retailers and their customers to use. Johann Heinrich Lambert (1728-1777) was a Swiss-French polymath who made important contributions to the subjects of mathematics, physics (particularly optics), philosophy, astronomy and map projections.
