The high forest-clad mountainsrise precipitously on both sides, with electric railwaysrunning up and around them, disclosing magnificentviews. The old red sandstone of these enclosinghills has been liberally hewn out to make the orna-mental columns for the Court House portico and buildthe castellated jail, and also the red gothic chapel. Thispoint of outlook is an isolated remnant of Potsdamsandstone, lying, the geologists say, unconformablyon the Laurentian rock. Beyond Reading, the Schuylkill breaks throughthe Blue Ridge at Port Clinton Gap, eighteen milesto the northwest. The winding and romantic passis about three miles long, and just beyond there is, atPort Clinton, a maze of railway lines where theReading Company unites its branches convergingfrom various parts of the anthracite coal-fields. TheLittle Schuylkill River here falls into the largerstream, and a branch follows it northward to Ta-maqua
