Pontresina owes its importance as a mountain-eering station to the proximity of the Bemina Chain, which sep-arates the Upper Engadine and the Bregaglia from the Valtellina,and is hardly inferior in grandeur to the Monte Rosa group. Thislofty range, with its vast expanse of neve and glaciers (Rom. Va-dret, Ital. Vedrettd), is now so favourite a goal of travellers thatPontresina is often crowded in summer.
