The suburbs are quite handsome, and are mainly occu-pied by wealthy foreign and native merchants. Beyrout is thethird city in Syria in size, and is rapidly becoming the most im-portant in a commercial sense. The large number of Europeansresiding in it have given to it a good share of western enterprise,and it is actively engaged in a large and growing commerce withEurope and the countries of the Mediterranean. The Lebanon dis-trict is heavily engaged in the production of raw silk, all of whichis exported from Beyrout. The imports of Damascus and theregion it supplies all pass through this port. It is connectedwith all the important ports of the Mediterranean by steamers,there being usually one steamer a week. There are severalgood hotels in the city conducted on the European plan, andbankers, native and foreign, are established here in numberssufficient, and with facilities ample enough, to afford every assist-ance to commerce and to travellers. The Consul-General of theUnited States for Syria resides at Beyrout, and the leadingnations of Europe are similarly represented. The harbor of Beyrout is too small for the purposes of moderncommerce, but the Bay of St. George, which lies in front of thetown and is sheltered by high hills, aff
