Admetus, king of Pherae in Thessaly, heard beautiful music from his fields. The man was the god Apollo in disguise.

According to Greek mythology, Admetus was king of Pherae in Thessaly. He was was of the Argonauts under Jason who went to retrieve the Golden Fleece in Colchis. One day, the king of gods Zeus sent his son, the god Apollo, to the world of mortals to serve as a servant for a year. Admetus met what he thought was a poor beggar and gave him a position. A year later, Admetus heard beautiful music from his fields (pictured in this 1911 illustration) - there the old beggar who was watching the sheep had transformed into a young man. Apollo told him who he was and said he would grant him a request. Apollo granted that favor when Admetus sought his help in winning his wife Alcestis.
