Cyclists take part in the traditional Good Friday Meeting at the famous Herne Hill Velodrome. The first Good Friday Track Meeting, organised by the Southern Counties Cycling Union took place in 1903 and the almost unbroken series of meetings have continued to the present day. Throughout the 1920's and 30's the Velodrome attracted large crowds with attendance for the Good Friday event often exceeding 10,000 spectators. Today's event is hosted by the VCL club and British Cycling who together have responsibility for the day to day running of the historic velodrome under a lease from the Dulwich Estate, due to expire in 2008. Built in the 1890's the Herne Hill track was built as a state of the art facility providing a safe banked cycle track. It was at Hene Hill that the World Champion Bradley Wiggins developed his cycling career. It was used as the official cycling venue in the 1948 London Olympics and is the only site used in the 1948 post war games that is still in active use. Photo by Michael Walter/Troika
