Below the cornice of the Greek building we always finda band called the frieze; and below the projections whichcrown the columns, the antse, and every other principal mem-ber, we recognize the same peculiarity; each has its frieze ornecking, the division between it and the mass below beingdifferently marked in each case, but always by a line ofshadow. In the general necking of the building (at least ofa temple) this line of shadow is cast by the projecting filletcalled the tania; in antes, and the basements of some tombs,it arises from a general overhanging of the frieze before theplane below ; and in columns, and the basement of Lysicra-tes monument, it is formed by a groove, the direct reverseof the first method, but agreeing with it in the productionof a line of shadow. This peculiar echo of the main shadow,by a smaller one beneath it, seems to have been first faintlydeveloped in Egypt, seized upon and (like every
