Israel Paneas Banias Caesarea Philippi
The sanctuary was established inside the Banias Grotto, probably during the Canaanite period (3300-1200 BC). Circa 3rd century BC, Pan worshipping was probably initiated by Ptolemy II. Later, a temenos dedicated to Pan was erected by Hellenized Seleucids circa 198 BC, which included a temple, courtyards, the grotto and ritual niches. In 63 BC the area fell under Roman rule. Circa 16 BC, Herod the Great built at the mouth of the grotto a temple dedicated to his benefactor, Emperor Augustus.
