Voyager disc. Technician in a clean room installing the Golden Record carried by the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft as a message to intelligent life. The Voyagers were launched by US space agency NASA in 1977 to study the outer planets. They reached escape velocity and continued outside the solar system. They will reach nearby stars in 40,000 years. The gold-plated copper phonograph disc in each spacecraft gives audio and visual information about Earth and its people, including greetings in 55 languages. The disc is being fixed to the area of the spacecraft holding the electronics. The large dish antenna is off screen at top (see image C023/3102).
